Yellow in Winter

A dear friend is good to email or message me when she has “Yellow in Winter” moments. These are random occurrences of unexpected beauty. The title comes from a winter walk in the dog park with her best beastie friend when her spirit was especially low. All of the sudden, she spotted a tiny yellow flower popping up from the cold ground. It was hope for her. Thus, “Yellow in Winter” moments symbolize surprise beauty, grace, kindness, and hope.

Often our agendas for the day and our growing responsibilities can blind us to moments such as these. We neglect to pay attention to the birds feeding or the sun setting or the delicious blend of flavors on our plate at dinner. Not too long ago there was a health report about the permanent bend forward forming in the necks of young people from peering at their smartphones for so many hours. All of us are guilty of keeping our heads down, doing what comes next and ignoring the God-provided beauty that wants to bless us.

In the gospels, Jesus encourages us to not be anxious. “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (Matthew 6:25) Jesus goes on to promise that God takes care of the birds of the air and grass of the field, so of course God will take care of us!

Have peace, my friends, and rest in the good and merciful care of God. May this promise provide you the assurance you need to look up and spot yellow all around!
